Emigration: from Ireland to Canada, 1843, Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. 272 Michael apparently was a tobacco smuggler working with his brother-in-law Frank McDonnell in Canada. One day in 1843, Michael learned that a British revenue cutter was in the harbor. If found, he would be arrested and maybe hanged for smuggling. That night he caught an outgoing boat for Canada with his wife, son Patrick and as many things as he could carry.

arrival in Chicago, 1848. 272 In 1848, Michael and his family left Canada for Milwaukee where he intended to go into the meat packing business. A storm came up enroute and the captain of the ship decided to put in at Chicago instead of Milwaukee.

Death, 1852, Chicago. 224 Michael was a member of the volunteer fire department and responded to a house fire in the dead of winter. Part of the building fell on him. The other firemen extinguished the fire, pulled away the timber and picked up Michael, soaking wet. He died a few days later of pneumonia.


Michael married Bridget McDonnell, daughter of Unknown and Mary Gallagher, on 14 Apr 1842 in Kilmore Moy, County Mayo, Ireland.271 (Bridget McDonnell was born in 1818 in Ireland,273 died on 4 Jan 1878 in Chicago 273 and was buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Chicago, Cook, IL 274.)
