James Helms

  • Born: 7 Aug 1817, Alburg, Grand County, Vermont (see note) 283
  • Marriage (1): Phoebe Wait on 30 Jan 1841 in New York 282
  • Marriage (2): Sarah Pitts in Jan 1861
  • Died: 27 Nov 1896, Riverton, Fremont County, Iowa at age 79 283
  • Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa 284

Noted events in his life were:

Alburg, VT, 1790-1830, Vermont. Alburg is in the most northwest corner of the state of Vermont, just south of the Canadian border and just east of the state of New York. It is currently (2004) in the county of Grand Isle. In the 1790 census, Alburg is listed in Chittenden County. Chittenden County adjoins Grand Isle County but Alburg is quite far from Chittenden County, so Grand Isle County must have been carved away from Chittenden at some time between 1790 and 1830.

Alburg is about 65 - 70 miles from Brasher, New York, which is where James Helms and his family are living in 1850 and where Belinda Helen Helms Noble may have been born.

Census Record: Possible Ancestor, 1790-1800, Alburg and Shelburn VT. The 1790 and 1800 censuses show a Samuel Helms living in Chittenden County Vermont. Both censuses only list the name of the head of the family and then has hash marks in a chart that shows the numbers of the other inhabitants, whether they are male or female and their age range.

In the 1790 census, Samuel is living with a family in Alburg. There is a female over 16, probably his wife. and a male under 16. This could be an ancestor of James, who was born in about 1820 (he was 30 in the 1850 census).

The 1800 census shows Samuel living in Shelburn, VT. I could not find the decoder for the 1800 chart but there appear to be 4 other inhabitants in the household.

Move, Abt 1829, Franklin County, NY. 284

Census, 1830, Alburg, Grand Isle, Vermont. Two families named Helms are living in the same city in Vermont in 1830 and each could have included James. James is 30 in 1850, so he was born in about 1820. In the 1830 census, only the name of the head of the household is listed. The other members of the family are listed in a chart that shows ranges of age and the number of family members in that range. The two families are headed by Rouse Helms and Sands Helms. The other members are listed as follows:
Males Females Males Females
Ages 0-5 Rouse - 1 Sands 1 2
5-10 1 1 1 2
10-15 1 2
15-20 1
30-40 1 1
40-50 1 1

There are five males in the right age ranges as James could have been in eith the 5-10 or 10-15 age range.

Census, 1850, Brasher, St. Lawrence County, New York. The 1850 census has the James Helms family living in Brasher, St. Lawrence County, NY.

The records show James as 30, a laborer, born in Vermont. Phebe, 30 and their children Newell, 8, born in NY; Belinda, 6, born in NY; Titus, 2, born in NY; and Emily less than 1, born in NY.

Move, 1855, To Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. 284 James and Phoebe were among the original settlers of Nashua, Iowa. James became a Methodist at about this time.

Census, 1860, Nashua, Bradford, Chickasaw County, Iowa. The 1860 census shows the James Helms family living in Nashua but without Phoebe. James, 42 and born in VT is s farmer. The children are Newell, 19 a laborer, Belinda, 16, Titus, 13, Emily, 10, Justine, 8, and Hnery, 6. All the children were born in NY.

Also living with the family is Olive Bartlett, 22, female, servant born in Canada West.

Remarried, Jan 1861. James remarried in 1861 to Sarah Pitts.

Ferry Boat. 284 James operated a ferry boat across the Cedar River.

Means. 284 Late in his life, James was considered a man of considerable means.

James married Phoebe Wait, daughter of Willett Wait and Belinda Scott, on 30 Jan 1841 in New York.282 (Phoebe Wait was born on 2 May 1820 in Isle La Motte, VT,282 died on 28 Mar 1860 in Nashua, Bradford, Chickasaw County, Iowa 282 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Chickasaw County, Iowa 285.)
