License: Tower, 23 Feb 1463 or 1464, Balwearie, Scotland. 181 On 23 Feb 1463/64, James III granted to William Scott of Balwearie a special licence to erect a fortified castle on his lands of Balwearie. He received permission to fortify the 60-foot tower with walls and ditches to strengthen it with iron gates and to provide it in the upper part with engines of defence.

A royal commission in 1933 reported the north gable and east wall, as wll as part of the south wall, still standing fairly complete, showing the tower to have been 43 feet long and at least 28 feet broad, measuring the walls averaging six feet in thickness.


William married Isabel Moncrief, daughter of Sir John Moncrief and Unknown.
