Death of his father. 1678 Greystoke's father died while he was still a child and he became a ward of his mother's second husband, Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville de Raby, until he reached his majority in 1342.

First wife. 1678 His first wife was Lucy de Lucie, daughter of Thomas, Baron Lucy, but the marriage was childless, and they divorced.

Biography, 1342-1355. 1678 William was involved, on the English side, in the Hundred Years' War between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France, including the Siege of Calais and served under Edward, the Black Prince, in France. He was also part of the crusade of Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaste to Prussia in 1351. In the early 1350s he was involved in the negotiations to secure the release of David II of Scotland, who had been taken prisoner at the Battle of Neville's Cross on 17 October 1346. Greystoke was made a captain of Berwick-upon-Tweed but, because of his service in France, he was not present when the town fell to the Scots in August 1355.

Death, 1359, Brancepath Castle, Durham, England. 1678 William died on 10 July 1359, at Brancepeth Castle , the seat of his step-father. His step-father attended the funeral.
